What we’re doing

On December 13, we will deactivate two legacy bootstrap plugins: Easy Bootstrap Shortcode (EBS) and UNC Bootstrap Shortcodes. In turn, we will activate a new plugin called UNC Content Elements.

Why we are doing this

The original bootstrap plugins are no longer supported or updated by the original developers. They also cause accessibility issues. In conjunction with the Digital Accessibility Office (DAO), ITS Digital Services developed a more modern plugin that provides the same functionality and addresses accessibility issues. The new plugin also offers additional customization options. By creating our own plugin, we can actively maintain it and continue to improve accessibility on our WordPress networks.

What should you do

We will make the change for you. We ask that you review your site after December 13 to ensure that everything looks correct.

What this means for your website

For most websites, this change will be seamless to you and invisible to your website visitors. For some websites with a lot of customization, you may notice some differences, especially with Accordion (Toggles) and Tabs shortcodes. In some cases, design elements may not display correctly.

Elements available via UNC Content Elements are:

  • Badge
  • Button
  • Button Dropdown
  • Button Group
  • Button Group Toolbar
  • Cards
  • Columns
  • Description List
  • Horizontal Rule
  • Icon
  • Icon Heading
  • Image Effects
  • Responsive Image
  • Jumbotron
  • Label
  • List Notifications
  • Popover
  • Panel
  • Progress Bar
  • Servicebox
  • Tables
  • Tabs
  • Accordion (Toggles)
  • Tooltip
  • Well

What you should do if you notice design issues or have questions

Because customization can vary between websites, we cannot anticipate every issue that may arise. If something on your website does not look right, please submit a ticket. We will be available to make any needed updates.

You can also schedule 15-minute sessions during office hours with Paul Cardillo, our support developer, to work through any issues. Choose the “WordPress Office Hours” option.

  • Tuesdays 1:30-3:30 p.m
  • Thursdays 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Additional 30-minute UNC Content Elements plugin office hours have been scheduled. Select the “Bootstrap plug-in consult” option.

  • Friday, December 10: morning appointments
  • Monday, December 13: afternoon appointments
  • Wednesday, December 15: midday appointments

Why now?

ITS hosts more than 5,000 websites on the WordPress networks. We realize there is never an ideal time to make changes. To minimize the impact, we selected December 13 because it marks the beginning of the academic winter break.

Want to update your website before December 13?

Site administrators who are comfortable activating and deactivating plugins themselves can deactivate Easy Bootstrap Shortcodes and UNC Bootstrap Shortcode and activate UNC Content Elements.

If you would like assistance updating the plugins before December 13, please request service through help.unc.edu or book time for a one-to-one consult with Paul Cardillo. See schedule above.
